Propane Fireplace

A propane fireplace has become a viable substitute when natural gas just isn't available. Both types of fireplaces will run off of gas instead of electricity or wood, so they can be fired up during a power outage (provided your igniter isn't run on electric). One thing you will notice when using any type of gas fireplace is that you get a nice, steady output of heat typically pumped through a fan or blower unit. Propane and natural gas also do not need to be cleaned out like a wood unit, and will put less dust into the air.

Main Differences Between Propane And Natural Gas Fireplaces

Should both be available to you in your home then you should consider the options carefully before deciding on which fireplace would work best. If you have natural gas hookups coming into your house to run other appliances then the quickest solution would be to use those to power a natural gas fireplace. The installer could simply run a new line in your basement and up through the floor where the unit will be placed. Using propane in this case would be more difficult because you would have to have a tank put somewhere on your property and a new propane gas line run into the basement. In many areas of the country, especially country settings with few neighbors, there is no natural gas available. In this case propane will be your only option, but it likely already provides energy to your other appliances.

Natural gas fireplaces will burn slightly cleaner than their propane counterparts, which will reduce the amount of residue buildup left behind from the hot fire. Propane tends to leave a very thin layer of oil on windows or other smooth surfaces. Also, since natural gas is drawn right from the pockets within the soil it could be considered more environmentally friendly (propane is processed before it can be used). However, for the majority of homeowners their location will be the greatest determinate. If they can get natural gas in their house then they will likely go that route. If not, a propane fireplace would make a great addition to any family room. You can keep your home warm during even the coldest months of winter without the worry of cutting up and storing wood to burn.
